Industrial Floor Sealer 

When you are preparing an industrial floor, the most important thing is that the paint actually adheres to the surface. You’ve ensured that the substrate is in perfect shape to receive the application of paint. That is, it has been cleaned and is free from substances such as oil, grease and laitance. Loose material has been cleaned up. The substrate needs to be pristinely clean. It depends on the surface contamination but the techniques for cleaning can involve acid etching, grinding, light mechanical scabbling, blasting or degreasing.

Particularly with concrete but also with plaster, asbestos, wood, sand, or cement rendering, the flooring should be primed and sealed. Reepol’s Reeprime EWD300 is a water dispersable epoxy primer and sealer that combines both these elements of good floor preparation. Because it is solvent free, EWD300 is excellent for areas where food preparation is handled. It is also non-flammable, being water based.

Reeprime EWD300 is a two-part epoxy bonding and sealing system and as well as priming and sealing, it is a bonding agent. It is perfect for fail-proof adhesion of the floor coating to any sound substrate, damp or dry. In certain cases, such as dense concrete, EWD300 can be thinned with water. This ensures maximum adhesion to the substrate. A second coat should be applied ideally once the first coat is touch dry. At the latest, the second coat should be applied within 24 hours.

When the primer and sealer is ready, the floor is ready for its paint. Let’s look at applying Reecote EC017 Clear. EC017 Clear comes in a 5.0 kilogram pack that covers four square metres per kilogram. The surface can be decorative if you wish. Reecote EC017 Clear is also part of the Reeflec EC017 pack which contains EC017, EC017 Clear, and acrylic flakes.

In the decorative application, begin with EC017 and immediately broadcast the flakes over the EC017. Let the EC017 layer cure and brush away the excess flakes. Now the floor is ready for the application of EC017 Clear.

Reecote EC017 is a two-pack system and the packs should not be split because of the necessity of accurate measurement of the components. The only way that packs should be split is if accurate weighing facilities are available. It is pre-weighed and the pack has the correct proportions of the curing agent and the resin already weighed. It is important that the entire contents of the curing agent are added to the entire contents of the resin pack, not the other way round. The mixture needs to be combined for two to three minutes. The pot life at +10ºC is 40 minutes, at +20ºC, 30 minutes and at +30ºC, 15 minutes. The external temperature can make quite a difference when you apply this coating. The epoxy resin is created during the chemical reaction of the two components and this generates a great deal of heat.

As the pot life extends, the mixture can become too hot to work with and when the chemical reaction heats up the components entirely, the coating hardens. If this happens before it is completely applied, the epoxy is rendered useless. It hardens in the container and you have to start over with a new mixture.
