How to Paint a Concrete Floor

Here is a DIY project that can turn out perfectly with Reepol’s excellent products for working with concrete floors. If you prefer, Reepol can recommend a flooring contractor in your area who knows everything there is to know about floor cleaning and surface preparation, number of coats recommended, and which floor paints can be used.

Cleaning and Preparing the Surface

Let’s begin with floor cleaning and surface preparation. The concrete floor substrate must be clean, surfaces free of laitence, oil, grease or any residues that would impair adhesion. You can clean the substrate with a wide range of methods including acid etching, grinding, light mechanical scabbling, blasting and degreasing. The amount of floor contamination determines the method used.

If you’re working on an existing concrete floor, be sure to examine the condition thoroughly. It has to be in good repair without any loose material. REEPARE PR400 S.P. Is great for repairing damaged areas. This is a self-priming epoxy patch repair kit that is applied before the coating.

Once the flooring is clean and repaired, Reeprime EWD300 is a good choice for the next step. It is a water dispersible epoxy primer and sealer. If it is new concrete, it should be at least 28 days old or the moisture content less than six percent before applying Reeprime EWD300. Because it is water dispersible, it is solvent free, which makes it ideal for areas that deal with food. It also means that it is non-flammable.

It is a two-part epoxy bonding and sealing system that serves as a bonding agent for Reepol CBP flooring products that need fail-proof adhesion to concrete. It is a characteristic of Reeprime EWD300 that is adheres to sound, dry or damp substrates that are concrete, plaster, asbestos, wood, sand, or cement rendering.

If the concrete is dense, you can thin EWD300 with water. This guarantees maximum adhesion to the substrate. Within 24 hours, you should apply a second coat. As for the second coat, it can be applied as soon as the first coat is dry to the touch.

Choosing the Colour and Finish

How about a grey concrete floor? Reepol’s colour chart for Reepol’s REECOTE EC and REEFLOR EL range which are easy to apply to concrete flooring offers five shades of grey ranging from a very pale grey to a deep, almost charcoal, grey. In addition to the grey for the REECOTE EC and REEFLOR EL range, standard colours include black, white, beige, yellow, and several shades of blue, red and green.

If you wish to have another colour or custom match corporate logos or your decorative colour scheme, other colours are available on request. Reepol’s floor coatings can be colour matched to BS4800, RAL, or Pantone choice.

You also have a choice of finishes with these products. You can choose a quick drying high gloss finish or a quick drying low sheen concrete floor paint. Or a matt finish water dispersible epoxy coating such as REECOTE EC015 AS. Then there is REEFLOR EL005 which is a self smoothing epoxy flooring. Among the effects and finish types Reepol can provide which are suitable for interior use is paint protection with a slip resistant finish.

Epoxy resin floor paint is noted for being low maintenance, having a fast drying time, and is an industrial favourite for durability and overnight application. For more information, contact Reepol and our experts can answer any questions you may have about painting a concrete floor.
